Sugaring 101

Why choose sugaring over waxing?

Sugaring will not stick to live skin cells, is never hot, and is less likely to cause abrasion or tears than waxing. Sugaring only adheres to dead skin cells, making it a natural exfoliant.

100% natural, sugaring is great for sensitive skin that may usually react to resins contained in wax.

It's hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic and limits the risk of cross-contamination because a fresh ball of sugar is used for each client.

In general, because sugaring pulls hair in its natural direction of growth, over time, you should experience less and less discomfort as the hair becomes finer with less re-growth.

Every person reacts differently, as we all have different sensitivity levels. However, you can increase your chances of having a great experience by performing the following steps:

Be prepared for your appointment

Please make sure your hair is the right length.  The shorter it is, the less it will hurt, but if you have been shaving, allow atleast 2 weeks of growth. Shaving is what causes the hair to have a thick stubble.  If it is too short, it may not be ready to remove.  Don't exfoliate the day before.  Additional charges will apply for larger areas of hair and for additional time.

Let me know if you are taking Retin-A, Accutane, had any microdermabrasion, skin peels or are using any products containing acids.  Sugaring is contraindicated on active skin rash, open sores, sunburn, 48 hours pre/post tanning, infectious diseases and vericose veins.  Medications that are contraindications for sugaring: all retinoids, steroids, Accutane, Topical Vitamin-C, Hydrocortisone

Plan wisely! Caffeine, menstruation and pregnancy increase skin sensitivity. Schedule your sugar a few days before any outdoor events, special events or vacations. I like to plan my sugaring appointments sometime during the week after my menstruation as this makes my appointment the least painful, usually even painLESS!

The day of your sugaring appointment

Personal hygiene, please.  Be fresh and clean using warm, not hot water, and skip the lotions, oils, self tanners, deodorants or creams.  Don't exfoliate the day of.  ICING the brazilian area right before and on your way to your appointment helps tremendously with the discomfort!!  This is THE tried and true tip clients appreciate the most!!

Know exactly what you want.  You create your own design. Don't be afraid to communicate exactly how much hair you want removed.

Keep Calm.  The less anxious, the more relaxed you are, the better your experience will be.

It’s ok… If you are really concerned about pain, about a half hour before your appointment, you can take an anti-inflammatory. This can help in two ways: it will provide some pain relief and protect you from minor swelling, particularly for women during their monthly cycle.

Be comfy.  Wear loose comfortable clothing to prevent irritation and in-grown hairs

Less is more.  Try to keep makeup to a bare minimum for facial sugaring services.

Aftercare

For optimum results, don't shave between visits. Scheduling your visits 3-5 weeks apart will reduce unwanted hair growth, as well as result in a less painful experience each time.

For 24-48 hours after your appointment, avoid touching the area with your hands, keep the area clean and avoid sexual activity or hot tubs for at least 72 hours post-treatment as the potential for infection is greater.   Avoid excessive sun exposure for 24 hours as the skin will be more sensitive to UV rays.

Fight the bumps. While best to avoid loofahs or mesh sponges since they can harbor bacteria, you can gently exfoliate every 2-3 days beginning 2 days or according to sensitivity after your treatment to help keep the skin smooth, soft and free from bumps and in-grown hairs.  For your convenience we carry exfoliating cloths as a great option for gently buffing dead skin cells.

Moisturizing is important to help prevent in-grown hairs and we highly recommend one of our natural moisturizers or one without any silicones.
